Case Study in Collaboration:

IllumiNations:

Seeing All People Gain Access to God's Word in a Language They Can Clearly Understand by 2033.

What does it take for dozens of organizations, ministries, and funders to work together around a shared vision over many years? While collaboration is frequently discussed within philanthropy, truly large-scale collaborative efforts remain relatively rare. This session offers an inside look at one of the most significant examples of collaborative philanthropy in the global Church today.

IllumiNations is a global alliance of Bible translation organizations, funding partners, and ministry leaders working together toward the shared goal of ensuring that every people group has access to Scripture in the language they understand best by 2033. Rather than operating as a single organization, IllumiNations represents a coordinated movement built on shared vision, aligned strategy, collective investment, and deep trust among organizations that have historically operated independently.

In this session, Mart Green will first introduce us to the story of IllumiNations, sharing how the initiative began, how it has grown into one of the largest collaborative efforts in Christian philanthropy, and what has made that growth possible. From there, we'll use IllumiNations as a case study to explore the practical realities of collaboration at this scale. Together, we'll examine the role of shared vision, governance, trust, donor alignment, and organizational structure while also discussing what has proven more difficult than expected and what lessons have been learned along the way.

For Christian grantmakers, the conversation extends well beyond Bible translation. As more funders seek to address complex challenges that no single organization can solve alone, collaborative approaches are becoming increasingly important. This Learning Lab will invite participants to consider what lessons from IllumiNations might transfer to other areas of philanthropy and how funders can play a catalytic role in fostering deeper collaboration, greater alignment, and ultimately, greater Kingdom impact.
